Bone Health

Health and Wealth

Happy Thursday everyone , and today we are learning about strengthening the bones and muscles. Your peak bones mass (maximum bone destiny strength) gradually declines in your 40’s.

For some women, bone loss happens faster than for others. In fact, a woman can lose up to 20% of her bone density during the five – seven years following menopause.

3 Factors for bone health

Getting enough calcium

Vitamin d

Regular exercise ( 30-60 min , 3-4 days a week)

Bone loss doesn’t have any symptoms, and often the first sign of having osteoporosis is a fracture.

How to help:

🍎Calcium,Phosphorus along with other minerals like Vitamin D is essential to maintain bone health, if dietary part is concerned

🍎Exercise ( walking, Zumba, yoga, weight lifting etc)

🍎Avoid very low calorie diets

🍎Get plenty of vitamin d and k

Recommended dietary allowance:

👉🏽Calcium: Adults: 400 mg/day, Pregnancy / lactation: 1000 mg/ day

👉🏽Phosphorus: It is based on the maintenance of normal serum phosphorus levels in adults (2.5-4.5 [mg/d L)

👉🏽Vitamin D: Get the D3 form, have doctor assess you then tell you proper dosage to take (sun exposure, fatty fish, beef liver)

👉🏽Magnesium: 200-400 mg/day (Avocado, banana, pumpkin)

👉🏽Vitamin K: Take 180 micrograms of MK-7 along with fatty acids (eggs, meat, fermented foods)

Alkalinity Vs. Acidity

Health and Wealth

Hey everyone, hope you all are doing okay. Today we are going to learning about alkalinity and acidity. As always, please remember I am not a doctor yet! Everything stated here is based on my family and my opinion, training, and research. So please consult with your doctor before making any changes to your diet.

Acidity is measured on pH scale, which can range from zero to 14. If the pH is lower than 7, it is acidic and if it is higher than 7, it is alkaline. A pH of seven is neutral.

The skin, stomach, bladder, and vaginal area are highly acidic to protect us from outside invaders. Whereas most of our other organs and cells function best in an alkaline pH. Because many enzymes and chemical reactions in the body work best at a particular pH, a small change in the pH can have a profound effect on body function. The pH level at which your body works best is around 7.4.

Symptoms of acidity include:

Yeast infections/ Fatigue/ Weight gain/ Acne/ Allergies/ Cavities/ Headache/ Coughing Arrhythmia/ Vomiting / Nausea/ Diarrhea/ Bloating

Ways to balance your water

Baking Soda; With a Ph level of 8, it is the most popular. The recommended recipe is 1/8 tablespoon in 8 fluid ounces of boiled water. You can stir or shake until you can longer see the powder. Baking Soda is high in sodium, and the taste is bitter. If you are on a special diet that needs cutting down salt, the benefits may not be worth the risks to try this method.

Lemon Juice; Lemon juice is part of an alkaline diet. The juice, while highly acidic (typically having a pH of 2 or 3), is claimed to produce essential byproducts when metabolized. It was found that lemon juice can increase urine pH. However, science has yet to confirm the real impact this juice has on your blood pH or the claimed alkalinity-related health benefits of this drink. Similar to the baking soda recipe, you can add ⅛ tablespoon of lemon juice in 8 fluid ounces of clean water. You may want to juice the lemons beforehand and store the juice in the fridge for future use.

Ph drops are very popular and are highly concentrated minerals and electrolytes. You only need to add a couple of drops to each glass of water to increase its pH. The liquids usually come in small handy bottles so you can carry them everywhere with you. One single bottle can improve the pH of hundreds of glasses of water. This makes these drops a favored choice compared to lemon juice or Baking Soda.

You can find some here; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FJ26CUQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=luna0bc-20&linkId=bcc241f6f256f6dadf53eb510995262e

You can also use a Water filtration system, Water Filter Pitcher, and or Water Ionizer. I also drink coconut water for hydration. It is delicious if you are sick and dehydrated or after a long night out. Something cool to know is Alkaline, and coconut water is perfectly fine for light exercisers to drink after their workout sessions, but these beverages fall short for more hard-core athletes. Another fact is potassium can help lower blood pressure and enhance heart health. Coconut water is a good source of this mineral. But it’s preferable to get it by eating whole foods like spinach, sweet potatoes, and other vegetables, and drinking low-fat milk, because these options provide additional heart-healthy nutrients, such as fiber and vitamin D.

Did you know?

The pH of the food itself does not dictate how it reacts in our body. For example, one might think that fresh lemons and limes and raw organic apple cider vinegar are acidic, but they actually become alkaline when consumed.

PH Balances In Products;

Household Lye- 13.5 to 14.0

Bleach-11 to 13

Ammonia-11.5 to 12.0

Milk of magnesia- 9.3 to 10.0

Borax-8.4 to 10

Baking soda- 8.0

Sea Water-7.4

Blood-7.0

Distilled Water-6.7

Milk-6.2

Corn-6.0

Boric Acid- 4.2

Vinegar- 3

Question Of The Day

Health and Wealth

Do you need pulp?

Pulp is the fibrous byproduct leftover after extracting the juice from fresh fruits and vegetables. Technically, it’s called pomace. The juicier, thicker the vegetable, the more juice you’ll yield.

Why Keep The Pulp?

Pulp contains nearly 95% of the fiber of fresh fruits and veggies, as well as up to half the nutrients. They’re the very same things that we are urged to eat more of to reduce the risk for everything from type 2 diabetes and obesity to cardiovascular disease and cancer.

When you plan to use pulp in your cooking or baking, peel and core your produce before it goes down the chute. You don’t want apple seeds or tough pineapple peel in your homemade breakfast bars.

Benefits

Pulp is rich in fiber ; Fiber helps regulate the body’s use of sugars, helping to keep hunger and blood sugar in check. We need at least 20 to 30 grams of fiber per day for good health, but most of us average about 15 grams a day.

Gut Health is Health and Wellness; Your gut wall houses 70 percent of the cells that make up your immune system. When your gut is happy the body is.

Full of nutrients and minerals; When you juice a lot of the good stuff gets booted out.

How to store leftover pulp

If you’re not going to use your pulp right away, it’ll keep well in a sealed container in the fridge for about 24 hours.

You can also freeze it in bags, though the color and texture may change slightly when you thaw it.

Ways to use pulp:

Veggie Burgers

Soup Broth

Vegan Basil Pesto

Baked Goods

Smoothies

Breakfast

Fruit Leather

Popsicles

Clothing Dye

Cream Cheese Spread

Dog Treats

A fun recipe to try

Endometriosis and Adenomyosis

Happy #WellnessWednesday on a Thursday! Today we are back learning about #Adenomyosis & #Endometriosis. As someone who has been living with Adenomyosis for the past 5 years I feel like it is my duty to help educate and help heal. Both endometriosis and adenomyosis are painful progressive disorders of endometrial tissue. Fortunately, these disorders are treatable and non-life threatening, but I understand can be mentally taxing. Both make it harder to get pregnant, and unfortunately, some women can have both conditions.

What is it? Adenomyosis is a condition of the uterus (womb). The cells that usually form a lining on the inside of the uterus, also grow in the muscle wall of the uterus.

The term adenomyosis comes from the words:

adeno – glandmyo – muscle andosis – condition

Some of the symptoms include abnormal periods, painful periods, pain during sex, tiredness, anemia, and dizziness.

How are you diagnosed? Pelvic imaging such as ultrasound and MRI can detect signs of adenomyosis, but the only way to confirm it is to examine the uterus after hysterectomy.

Types of Adenomyosis:

Diffuse Disease- Widespread disease throughout the uterus

Invasion of the endometrial glands and/or storm into the myometrium

Focal Disease- May also form adenomyosis

Area or mass of disease within the myometrium

There may be both diffuse and focal disease present

What is it? Endometriosis (en-doe-me-tree-O-sis) is an often-painful disorder in which tissue similar to the tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus the endometrium grows outside your uterus.

The term Endometriosis comes from the words:

“endometriosis” = endometrium + the suffix -osis (which means condition). “The endometrium is the mucous membrane that lines the inside of the uterus (womb).

Some of the symptoms include excessive menstrual cramps, pain during intercourse, infertility, pain during urination during periods and painful bowel movements during period

How are you diagnosed? Pelvic exam, Ultrasound, Laparoscopy, Magnetic resonance imaging

Types of Endometrioses:

Superficial peritoneal lesion. This is the most common kind. You have lesions on your peritoneum, a thin film that lines your pelvic cavity.

Endometrioma (ovarian lesion). These dark, fluid-filled cysts, also called chocolate cysts, form deep in your ovaries. They don’t respond well to treatment and can damage healthy tissue.

Deeply infiltrating endometriosis. This type grows under your peritoneum and can involve organs near your uterus, such as your bowels or bladder. About 1% to 5% of women with endometriosis have it.

The Difference between Endometriosis and Adenomyosis:

With endometriosis the cells grow outside the uterus and usually in the ovaries, the cavities of the pelvis, and the supporting ligaments of the uterus.

With adenomyosis the cells grow within the walls of the uterus. As the wall grows thicker, it can cause pain and heavy bleeding.

Both conditions can lead to anemia from menstrual bleeding. This means you don’t have enough iron in your blood. Iron supplements may help.

Treatment:

Endometriosis and adenomyosis usually don’t require treatment unless they cause you problems.

Both may be managed with pain medicines, like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Hormone medicines, such as birth control pills, progestin and progesterone, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists might also be used.

But the only sure cure for adenomyosis is a hysterectomy to remove your uterus. You must be sure you don’t want any more pregnancies before you decide to have a hysterectomy, embolization, or ablation.

Herbs for Endometriosis and Adenomyosis:

Valerian

Rosa damascene

Frankincense and Myrrh

Vitamin B1 and Vitamin E

Magnesium

Omega-3 fatty acids

Chinese herbal medicine- Corydalis yanhusuo

Turmeric

Chamomile

Juice/ Smoothie Recipes for Endometriosis and Adenomyosis:

Make your own smoothie- Choose of each option

½ to 2 cups Greens (Kale, Chard, Spinach)

1 cup liquid (Water, Nondairy milk, Juice)

1 cup fresh fruit (Pineapple, Mango, Banana, Melon)

1 cup frozen goods (Ice, Frozen berries, or Cherries)

Protein (optional) ½ cup cottage cheese, 1 scoop protein powder

Flavor boost (ginger, cinnamon, cocoa powder, vanilla extract)

Pain Relief

1 rib celery, 1 cup cucumber, ½ cup pineapple, ½ lime wedge, 1 cup coconut water

Inflammation be gone

1 cup hemp or coconut milk, 1/2 cup frozen pineapple or mango, 1 fresh banana, 1 tbsp coconut oil, ½ tsp of turmeric/ cinnamon and ginger, 1 tsp chia seeds, 1 tsp maca root (opt)

Warnings:

Do not attempt to self-diagnose adenomyosis or endometriosis. The condition can have the same symptoms as other health problems some of which have different treatments. Although you can manage many symptoms related to painful, heavy, or long periods at home, it is important to seek the care of a health professional if your period worries you or keeps you from doing activities you enjoy.

In addition, always consult a health care professional before taking new medications, herbs, or supplements.

Common Juice Questions

What is a juice cleanse?

Juicing is a process of extracting vegetables and fruits and disposing of the fiber. It is used for detoxification, an alternative medicine treatment, and is often part of detox diets.

What does juicing do for the body?

In the body, the liver and kidneys were created to detoxify naturally cleanse your body. Juicing is a gentle way to cleanse and bring balance back into your life.

What are some benefits of juicing?

Juicing retains the full content of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants for the body. Juices are rich in all the nutrients of fruits and vegetables such as vitamin C, beta-carotene (converted to vitamin A) in the body, and folate. Juices are also filled with vitamin K, potassium, and magnesium.

Will you feel different if you start juicing regularly?

Yes, right away, you will feel your digestive system respond. It is recommended that you take it slow when you first start juicing. But within two weeks, you’ll notice more energy, glowing skin, and healthier skin, hair, and nails.

Should you wash your fruits and vegetables?

YES, YES AND YES. Please do not just do that little 10-second rinse you see on some pages/YouTube. Use a solution of three parts water and one part vinegar.

What’s the difference between juices and smoothies?

When you juice, you separate the water, which contains a large proportion (but not all) of the nutrients from the fiber and carbohydrate. You pass the vegetables through a feed tube in the juicer, and by the force of spinning blades within a basket, the juice is extracted, and a pile of dry pulp is collected separately. The juice is more comfortable for your body to digest because it doesn’t contain fiber or carbohydrates. This makes it an excellent drink for cleansing and detoxing.

Smoothies are made with a liquid — usually fruit or vegetable juice — and the whole fruit or vegetable (water, fiber, carbohydrate, and nutrients intact). This means that when you drink a smoothie, you’re drinking the total nutrients found in the juice and the pulp along with the fiber, which gives you a “full” feeling and satisfies your hunger longer.

ACNE

Hey everyone, Welcome back for another informative blog post. This year on my mind more than anything is helping others to learn how to heal in the comfort of their own home. From acne to bedwetting to high blood pressure. this year we will learn about many disorders and ways to help you. During this series you will learn about causes, recommendations, dietary modifications, nutrients that help, beneficial juices and more.

If you want to learn more about juicing check out >https://humblesoullifeofajuicer.blog/2020/05/15/unprocessed-juice/

To start off this series we will start by discussing acne. Acne is a general term often used to indicate acne vulgaris, which is a chronic inflammatory disease. It causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. Acne is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages. Acne typically appears on your face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders because these areas of skin have the most oil (sebaceous) glands. Hair follicles are connected to oil glands.

Effective acne treatments are available, but acne can be persistent. A wide variety of treatment regimens exist for acne vulgaris including benzoil peroxide, retinoids, isotretinoids, keratolytic soaps, alpha hydroxy acids, azelaic acid, salicilic acid as well as hormonal, anti-androgen or antiseborrheic treatments. However, none of these methods is free of side effects and their exact role in therapy is not clear.

A major cause for acne is hormonal changes, including puberty or menstrual cycles, may also contribute to some acne issues. The hormones, which have been attributed to acne consist of testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone and dihydrotestosterone, as well as insulin-like growth factor. In many adult women underline conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (POS), hirsutism, and endometriosis maybe a causing factor as well.

Testosterone is the male sex hormone that is made in the testicles

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone that your body naturally produces in the adrenal gland. DHEA helps produce other hormones, including testosterone and estrogen.

Dihydrotestosterone is a hormone that stimulates the development of male characteristics (an androgen-group of sex hormones)

Other major factors for acne include dandruff , excess oil production, hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells, bacteria, and inflammation.

It is important to remember that I am NOT a certified dermatologist just a humble herbalist and juicer spreading the knowledge I have learned and lived thru.

Acne signs vary depending on the severity of your condition:

Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)

Blackheads (open plugged pores)

Small red, tender bumps (papules)

Pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips

Large, solid, painful lumps under the skin (nodules)

Painful, pus-filled lumps under the skin (cystic lesions)

General Recommendations & Dietary Modifications

Cleanse your face twice a day with a sulfur-containing soap ( Always be sure to wash your face with clean hands)

Avoid using greasy creams and cosmetics and avoid medications that contain bromides and iodides.

Eliminate Sugars- Skin that is glucose intolerant is significantly impaired in acne patients.

(Glucose intolerance is an umbrella term for a group of metabolic conditions that result in higher than normal blood glucose levels)

Eating a high fiber diet may increase your chances with clearing your skin. Foods high in fiber like, whole grain cereals, whole grain breads, crackers, bran and legumes ( beans lentils, and split peas.

Reducing the consumption of fats and junk food may help with the decrease of acne and skin issues. A typical western diet is filled with lots of calories, fat, salt and sugar, and sadly too low in vegetables, fruit and whole grain fiber.

Schedule to do a juice cleanse once a month ( the start of the month is my go-to)

For a DIY Cleanse check out Humble Soul LLC Immune Boosting Box (https://humble-soul-llc-creations.myshopify.com/products/immune-boosting-box)

Always consult with doctor if and when you have series concerns about changes happening to your body.

Another trick I used in high school is cucumber juice, it is said to purify the blood and lymphatic system, resulting in a clearer complexion. Drink 4 to 5 cups per day for a week straight.

Warning; Cucumber juice may help with going to the bathroom! I recommend starting with 1-2 cups a day one in the morning and one in the evening. Make sure to eat a semi healthy diet and avoid FRIED FOODS, JUNK FOOD AND HEAVY PASTAS.

As always, please! , please!! , please!!! consult with a doctor or trusted physician before trying anything new from herbs to juicing etc. If you have a pre-exsiting conditions please also double check with someone certified ( herbalist or physician) if you take over the counter medications.

Nutrients That Help

Vitamin A: Reduces sebum production ; Sebum production – Is produced by sebaceous glands when they disintegrate. The sebaceous glands produce lipids, triglycerides, which are broken down by bacterial enzymes (lipase) in the sebaceous duct to form smaller compounds, free fatty acids.

Fatty Acids: If you have a low-fat diet omega-3 fatty acids maybe helpful. Pure cold-pressed flaxseed oil is a good source (high in estrogen).

Chromium: Improves glucose tolerance levels and enhances insulin sensitivity

Zinc: Is important in wound healing, inflammation control, and tissue regeneration

Beneficial Juices

Carrot, Kale, and Parsley (Sources of beta-carotene )

Kale, Spinach, and Green Pepper (Source of vitamin b6)

Spinach, Kale, and Beet greens (Source of folic acid)

Ginger root, Parsley, and Carrot (Source of Zinc)

Herbs For Acne

Medicinal plants with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties can be used in different ways in the treatment of acne and other infectious diseases. The herbs below can be used alone or in a mix. It is always important to be aware of allergies you may have before trying a new routine and or product.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis ) Calendula, also known as pot marigold, is a perennial flower native to the Mediterranean, although it is grown domestically throughout the world. Used for acne creams, soaps or oil are recommended.

Contains flavonoids believed to have antiseptic properties that inhibit the growth of acne causing bacteria.

Calendula oil is believed to be a mildly effective treatment for a variety of superficial skin conditions, including acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

DO NOT apply it to an open wound without a doctor’s supervision. People who are allergic to plants in the daisy or aster family, including chrysanthemums and ragweed, may also have an allergic reaction to calendula (usually a skin rash).

(Vitex agnus-castus ) A popular herb which contains 250 species worldwide used for a range of female reproductive conditions such as PMS, infertility, acne and menstrual disorders. The Vitex agnus-castus fruit, also known as chasteberry or monk’s pepper, is about the size of a peppercorn.

Hormone-sensitive conditions such as endometriosis; uterine fibroids; or cancer of the breast, uterus, or ovaries should not use this plant. Pregnant and nursing women should not use this plant.

Vitex agnus-castus can affect hormones and might affect estrogen levels. Don’t use vitex agnus-castus if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) One of the most ancient medicinal herbs known to mankind and member of the Asteraceae/Compositae family. Chamomile whole plant is used for making herb beers, and also for a lotion, for external application in toothache, earache, neuralgia and in cases of external swelling.

Chamomile has also been used to treat colic, croup, and fevers in children.

Chamomile is often used to treat mild skin irritations, including sunburn, rashes, sores and even eye inflammations.

People sensitive to ragweed and chrysanthemums or other members of the Compositae family are more prone to develop contact allergies to chamomile, especially if they take other drugs that help to trigger the sensitization.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) The tea tree was named by eighteenth century sailors, who made tea that smelled like nutmeg from the leaves of the tree. A person can treat acne, athlete’s foot, contact dermatitis or head lice using tea tree oil.

The oil possesses antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties.

Safe if used diluted in small amounts. (Jojoba and Sweet almond oil are popular for the skin/hair)

Tea tree oil should never be swallowed.

For the next section of learning we dive into myths about acne. For many years I have always heard that the cause of acne was junk food, pms, or stress but what if that was not all true.

Myth #1: Greasy foods cause breakouts

Because acne is caused by an increase in sebum, which is an oily substance, people have long assumed that eating greasy foods makes your skin greasy, leading to an acne eruption. This has never been scientifically proven, so you don’t need to worry about eating fried or greasy foods when it comes to your skin. However, there are plenty of reasons you should still limit these types of foods, especially when it comes to your heart and your waist circumference.

Myth #2 Eating Chocolate causes breakouts

For the most part, this is an old wives’ tale. Researchers haven’t been able to link cocoa to acne reliably. However, milk chocolate has a lot of sugar. When you eat chocolate, choose dark varieties with 70% cocoa or more because they’re much lower in sugar than milk chocolate.

Myth #3 Wearing makeup makes you breakout

Some types of liquid face makeup can clog your pores, but most cosmetic companies now offer oil-free and non-comedogenic product. Be sure to wash your makeup off each night and clean your makeup brushes weekly to avoid spreading bacteria.

For our last section of the post I am shouting out a few small businesses that may help you on your journey.

Chronic Pain and How to help yourself heal.

Health and Wealth

Hey, hey everyone, I hope everyone has been having a wonderful holiday this season. I know with covid, things have been different, but I hope you find a piece of joy through it. Today we will dive into chronic pain, some of the causes, medication, and more. As always, please consult with your doctor or a trusted physician before changing your diet if you have any concerns.

What is chronic pain?

Chronic pain is an unpleasant sense of discomfort. Imagine catching a cramp, a tree falling on the cramped spot, and then an elephant steps on you a bunch of times. Chronic pain persists over time and is often resistant to medical treatments.

Chronic pain:

It may be related to a number of different medical conditions, including (but not limited to) diabetes, arthritis, migraine, fibromyalgia, IBS, endometriosis, cancer, shingles, adenomyosis, sciatica, and previous trauma or injury. Chronic pain may worsen in response to environmental and psychological factors.

Over the counter medicine Given:

  • Ibuprofen
  • Asprin
  • Sedatives
  • Opioids
  • Antidepressants
  • Antimigraine medicine
  • Acetaminophen-pain relievers/fever reducers

Natural Remedies:

  • Soak in warm water 20-40 minutes (herb soaks, water therapy, whirlpool tub)
  • Dry heat therapy-heat packs or wraps) Plenty at Walmart
  • Essential Oils-Peppermint, Lavender, Rosemary (Make sure to dilute oil or make a salve)
  • Massage Therapy: A high-quality therapeutic massage spurs blood flow, reduces muscle tension, and boosts wellness feelings.
  • Meditate and Relax-If, you feel your pain, notice the pain, and return to your sound. Start with a few minutes, and gradually lengthen to 30 minutes if you find meditation enjoyable. Youtube has much good meditation-video; my favorite channel is https://www.youtube.com/user/MichaelSealey.
  • Swap more anti-inflammatory foods into your diet-Anti-inflammatory foods—such as fruits, vegetables, unsaturated fats, whole grains, beans, nuts, and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids—may play a role in reducing pain for some people.
  • Acupuncture- A Chinese practice where fine needles are used
  •  Herbs to use- Devil’s claw and white willow bark, for example, can decrease the joint pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis. And primrose and ginger may help ease chronic muscle pain associated with fibromyalgia. Other herbs to use are turmeric, feverfew, eucalyptus, cloves, and green tea.

My Top Two Herbs:

  1. Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) seeds are stocked with 16 analgesic and 27 antispasmodic chemicals. It makes a pleasant licorice-flavored tea and is especially good for menstrual cramps. But avoid the herb while pregnant or nursing because of its estrogenic effects.
  2. Gingerroot (Zingiber officinale) has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that can alleviate digestive cramps and mild pain from fibromyalgia. You can take 1 to 4 grams of powdered ginger daily, divided into two to four doses. You are making tea from 1 teaspoon chopped fresh root simmered in a cup of water for about 10 minutes.
